The International Autobiographic Writing Circle
The Circle developed within the Libera Università dell'Autobiografia
(Free University of Autobiography) of Anghiari in 1999 at the initiative of Stefanie Risse.
The Circle is a volunteer organisation and is supported by the comune of Anghiari (AR).
The Circle consists of a local group of "Correspondents" and a group of "Writers"
in all of Italy, Germany, Grand Britain and Finland.
Why?
The primary aim of the Circle is autobiographic communication; that is,
the exchange of the experiences of life through correspondence between
persons varying in age, gender, culture and nationality.
To meet one another through the stories of life: learning about others,
to know ourselves better.
The second aim of this enterprise is the creation of a collection
of European autobiographies as a basis for either cultural
exchange or for scientific research in the future
The "Correspondents"
We are Italian, German and American. We are varied in age from 30 to 86 years.
The group convenes weekly to read the letters sent to us and to answer each one individually.

Marisa Murgo, Oriana Borghi, Sara Conato, Siegfrid Fehrenbach, Stefanie Risse, Virna Pigolotti.
The "Writers"
The persons who write their memories are, if Italian, members of the Free University of Autobiography. Writers of other nationalities are, for the most part, members of other centres of autobiographic writing in Europe, such as
Deutsches Tagesbucharchiv von Emmendingen (Germania) - Akademy for Folk Art and Autobiography of Karsamaki (Finlandia) - Mass Observation, University of Brighton, Sussex (Gran Bretagna).
The "Texts"
The texts or letters are in response to the topics which the Circle sends out three times a year. Often the texts are accompanied by drawings and photographs, and most of the time they are handwritten.
All the texts, together with cover letters and copies of the answers are filed in the personal folder of each writer and archived in the office of the Circle.
