PRESENTATION OF THE L.U.A

The Libera University of Autobiography of Anghiari ( Arezzo-Italy), is a non-profit cultural association founded in 1998 by Professor Duccio Demetrio ( Professor of Philosophy of Education and Narrative and Autobiographic techniques at the University of Milan-Bicocca) and the journalist Saverio Tutino ( founder of the National Diaristic Archive in Pieve S. Stefano- Arezzo).
The Libera University of Autobiography (LUA), with the scientific patronage of the University of Milan-Bicocca, and with its ten years of activity, constitutes a research and training community for the diffusion of the culture of memory in all social and cultural contexts. In fact hundreds of people have participated in the permanent activity of the LUA in Anghiari, and have learnt the art of writing of oneself. They have listened to the more noted speakers in the area of autobiographic study in Italy and from overseas, and they have received directions and ideas for using the principles, methods and developments of the pedagogy and the culture of memory. Today in schools, social and health services, in regions, penitentiary institutions, in the personalized accompanying of people, in care, learning centers, and in public and private social institutions, many working groups are constituted, coordinated amongst themselves, that, following training at Anghiari, are dedicated to promotional activities and the diffusion of personal writing. Autobiographic writing in fact is an irreplaceable means and method for valorizing oneself, for the development of cognitive capacities and different forms of thinking; for creating a sensibility towards reading the testimonies of others and to listening to them to then rewrite the story.
The aspects that are practiced in the diverse training areas of the LUA ( the training and specialization school; basic and advanced seminars; scientific symposiums; study conventions ) place emphasis on auto-pedagogic dimensions, auto-analytical and introspective, and on valuing life stories in diverse territorial contexts. The possibility for everyone to gain access to reading and writing competencies, which was developed above all in the 1900’s, has enabled the enlivenment of meetings, projects and courses in Anghiari, adding an intergenerational and intercultural value using narration and written methodologies of the self. The aim is to contribute in this way to social participation and the development of an active citizenship. Anyone therefore can participate in the didactic initiatives in Anghiari, without the need for any educational qualifications, as long as they possess the ability, even rudimentary, to read and write. In this way the LUA is fully part of the permanent education process which values the principles of lifelong learning.

AIMS OF THE ASSOCIATION
The non-profit association, named “LIBERA UNIVERSITY OF AUTOBIOGRAPHY” mostly operates through the direct, personal and free actions of its actual adherents and aims to:

Promote and undertake training of all those who wish to dedicate themselves to the study of the theory and methodology of their and other’s life stories for educational, social, therapeutic and cultural purposes.
Institute specialization courses with a limited number of participants, for teachers, educators, social workers, animators, psychologists, graduates of any university faculty, but also those who, regardless of their educational qualifications demonstrate a strong interest for autobiographic research and writing.
Organize specific and targeted cultural, scientific and training events aimed at the diffusion of the culture of memory ( seminars, short courses, exhibitions, conventions, workshops, the realization of local, national and international projects, long-distance autobiographic writing circles in collaboration with other European groups etc.).
Undertake research activities for institutions, local communities, schools, associations, companies and other social groups, with the aim of gathering conserving, analyzing, valorizing and diffusing the collective memory, oral stories and micro-stories.
Conserving and archiving material produced in the course of training experiences as instruments for further in-depth research.
Offering consultancies, supervision, scientific and didactic assistance for scholastic institutions and others such as social-assistance and therapeutic institutions, penitentiary institutions, workplaces and companies, all with the aim of undertaking autobiographic training projects both for professionals and those in training.
